Ventana - An Enchanting Resort in BIg Sur

Summary: I love Ventana. I highly recommend visiting  and exploring the landscape at Lime Kiln and Andrew Molera State Park which I've blogged about here. Please note this is #notsponsored . Yes, that means we paid our own bill! Lots of details in the following review. including a Post Ranch vs Ventana comparison.  Can you tell there's something exciting beyond this beautiful gate? There's something special about Big Sur, a magic in the light, the presence of the Pacific, the cliffs, beaches, redwood forests and the murmur of the surf. It's one of my favorite places in California. I couldn't think of anywhere else I wanted to be to celebrate turning fifty, because it's a place where there's a sense of nature, space and light and a wide horizon. We've been to Big Sur many times and for a celebration there are two fantastic hotels vying for your attention. The exclusive, modern and very private, cliff top Post Ranch Inn and on the other side of the road the …

Who Doesn't Love Free?

When we arrived home from our trip to the Middle East I was going through our enormous pile of post and pulled out something that looked like junk mail. It was an "invitation" through one of our credit cards for a "free" night at a Hyatt Regency here in northern California. I almost binned it and I was certain that "free" meant a 90 minute plus timeshare pitch. No thanks, no matter what they're offering.

When I read the fine print, it looked like nothing was required and it appears that Hyatt is targeting their marketing by offering a free night with no strings attached. Ok, so I'm still dubious, but we're going to take them up on their offer and I'll let you know how it transpires. We're bringing his highness, so of course "free" now means a $75 dog fee, I guess you can't get everything you want! For $75 they asked for the dog's name and I'm sure that guarantees he'll get at least 20 cents in dog biscuits at the front desk. However, like all labradors if you have a biscuit in your hand he doesn't care what you call him!

The reservation agent informed me they do have a size limit on the dogs they allow and I confessed he's a labrador. They happily assured me they won't weigh the dog, but really - does he look under 40lbs!!?
